OpenFOAM in 2028
If you can wave a magic wand...
A desktop full of:
Dict files
Folders
Commands
FunctionObjects
Mess…
Despite my experience with OpenFOAM, I still need to be (very) careful with every setup I do, especially when complexity increases.
I can miss:
key values to keep the solver happy
relaxation settings to keep the solution steady
Y+ / layer growth when required
etc.
Yes, even me.
You get an incredible platform for multi-physics simulation with extensive control over the simulation setup like no other.
BUT with that control comes responsibility...
“Will it diverge with these fvScheme settings?”
”Will it converge at this time step / CFL?”
”What Y+ / wall refinement do I need?”
And when in industry, you add:
“How much time will this take?”
”Do I really need this setting?”
My personal opinion, born from my experience is that OpenFOAM needs to be more forgiving to end-users.
I don’t mean hide everything, but be more “guiding” much like commercial alternatives…
Correct me if I’m wrong, but current tools and OpenFOAM GUI’s (usually simple wrappers exposing parameters) out there don’t do justice to this idea.
I want to make the experience of using OpenFOAM better…
Better for beginners / enthusiasts.
Better for Researchers.
Better for Engineers.
So, today, I’m asking for your guidance - please answer the poll below and add comments for any details that may help steer my efforts in the coming weeks and months.
What I’ve been listening to this week:
Until next week. 👋
